Introduction of Bare

Xia Yanguo

The English word Bare has a few explanations, including naked, uncover, make it public, burn off, etc. These explanations involve both actions and contents; in addition to their background, intention and significant is the theme of this exhibition.

Each action or attitude aims to one or several meanings. The theme of this exhibition also emphasizes the reasons and intentions beneath Bare. Use the basic meaning of “naked” as an example: What is naked? Why is it naked? What are the realistic difficulties? When it comes to specific context and content, the answers for these questions are undoubtedly complex and difficult to address.

I translate Bare into a Chinese word “bright”. This word exists in Korean as well and it has at least two meanings: bright, easier to be seen, it means there’s no secret to be hidden between the lines; or show, exhibit yourself. Either good or bad, it’s important to be genuinely exhibited. It speaks to the “rhetorical” feature of Korean culture.

As a developed capitalist country, Korean culture is undoubtedly a significant component to the rich global culture. With all the respects to Korean culture, I wish to discuss with Korean artists and audience on various issues in this country, through this exhibition.

Today, the world is more and more globalized. Along with the transformation of the global landscape and accelerated communications between the western and the eastern culture, in Korea, it has become a dominant political and cultural inquiry to ask: how to determine the country's position and identity? And how to play its role? Politically, it needs to deal with Europe and America while managing the relationships within Asia. Culturally, Korea is actively seeking to spread its culture, either in developed countries in Europe and America or in developing countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, admittedly via different styles and have reached different extents.

The modern Korea, especially the hallyu, which ranges from TV programs to pop music to Korean food, has become an important part of the world popular culture, and has reflected various aspects in Korean national culture. The positive side of Korean culture not only is a kind of self-recognition but also indicates to the anxious ideological identity. Because it requires a clear distinction when spread and communicate a particular culture, such a modified popular culture is blocking the diverse development of Korean contemporary culture.

Traditionally, Korea, in an abstractive manner, gives me the feeling of various rules and their ethical significances are both positive and negative.

The traditional collective ethics from Korea and the neo-liberal value influenced by the Western society have conflicted. The respect to tradition and anticipation to the future, as an illusion, support the development of Korean culture.

Today, as the society develops rapidly, the updates of Information that lead to fragmentation, each kind of cultural conflict is becoming more internalized and less obvious. Yet, conflicts and dilemmas still exist and permeates into every single aspect in our life. Where can we find them? It is also the main discussion of this exhibition.

Today’s Korean contemporary art scene is also going through an urgent transformation. The urgency is consistent with Korea’s political, social and cultural changes as well as the identity anxiety. While within the art scene, there’s competition between the relatively conservative and radical ones (China is the same while the background and content are different). Against this background, on the one hand, critical contemporary artists wish to break the rules and limits and make a positive effort, while, on the other hand, they are internalized within the entire cultural system.

From artist's’ creation, we could also detect the paradox.

The society needs independent voices from artists. They are playing a more and more important role in promoting the societal and cultural development. At the same time, these ways of voicing-up also reflect their own cultural conflicts or problems. In another word, on the one hand, the audience could see how artist discusses real issues via his/her artwork, on the other hand, the audience could also regard the artistic language, content and methodology as subjects for social studies, which eventually could help analyze the entire cultural reality.

I invited nine young Korean artists for this exhibition. After the opening, we will organize a panel discussion, in which overseas Korean artists or culture/art scholars will join us and discuss issues related to the exhibition. ■

영문단어 ‘bare’는 상황에 따라 ‘벌거벗은’ (naked), ‘아무것도 덮지 않다’ (uncover), ‘공개하다’ (make it public), ‘태워버리다’ (burn off) 등의 뜻으로 쓰인다.
